In 1893, fifty-seven numbered quartzite markers were placed on the South Dakota-Nebraska border beginning at the Keya Paha River and proceeding east along the border to the Missouri River. Number 34 was originally located near the southwest corner of Section 35 in Pleasant Valley Township, approximately 2 miles west and 5 miles south of Bonesteel. Similar markers were also placed west from the Keya Paha to the Wyoming border, north to the Montana border, and along the North Dakota-South Dakota border.
