Diamond Springs was one of the original relay stations of the 1860-1861 Pony Express, where a rider would exchange horses and then continue his ride. The station consisted of a rectangular stockade made of cedar logs, with four other buildings forming part of the stockade walls. The opening into the stockade was between two of the buildings that faced the trail about 200 feet south. The station stood on the south bank of the river. Sir Richard Burton visited the site on August 11, 1860, at 9:15 pm. and mentioned the dragon-fly and fire-fly that he called "lightning-bug." The station was on a true azimuth of 102 degrees and 3.941 miles from this monument location.
