Fort Knox has been designated a Registered National Historic Landmark under the provisions of the Historic Sites Act of August 21, 1935. The site possesses exceptional value in commemorating or illustrating the history of the United States. In 1998, appreciation was expressed to the people of Maine and the Friends of Fort Knox for the restoration of the roof.
