At the Battle of Marianna on Sept. 27, 1864, overwhelming Federal forces were stubbornly resisted by a Home Guard of old men and boys and a few sick and wounded Confederates who were at home on furlough; their fight was honored as a defense of home, liberty, and honor, and as a priceless heritage of a loyal people.
