The 88 Drive-In in Commerce City's Irondale neighborhood opened in August 1971 after local residents secured a zoning variance, but it soon became a flashpoint. Financial trouble led to X-rated films in 1972, triggering neighborhood protests, legal action, and even a 1973 bombing that damaged the concession stand. After reopening in 1973 without adult films, the theater changed owners several times before Bill Holshue bought it in 1976; his family has operated it since, with Susan Kochevar later becoming its public advocate. Despite pressures from digital conversion costs, traffic disputes, and redevelopment plans, it has endured as one of the region's surviving drive-ins and continued operating into 2026.
