At the old nursery site, Jefferson grafted and sowed the seed of special garden plants. In the Monticello nurseries, he propagated thirteen kinds of shrubs, forty-one species of ornamental trees, twenty-six vegetable varieties, six kinds of grasses, eleven nut trees, and fifty-three fruit tree varieties. The nurseries were the heart of his horticultural world, constantly replenishing his landscape.
