The Croton Falls Fire Department was established in 1892, and the Croton Falls Fire District was established in 1939. It has proudly protected the town of North Salem and parts of the towns of Carmel and Southeast. Its warning ring was originally given by the New York Central Railroad in 1892. Called a tire, it was a wearing ring heated red hot and pressed onto the drive wheel of a steam locomotive. Before the department acquired a bell, the ring served as its warning alarm. Hung by the firehouse and struck with a sledgehammer, it notified firemen of a fire. It remained in use until it was replaced by the bell, and in 2018 it was relocated to the North Salem Station, where it is displayed in front of the firehouse as a reminder of earlier and simpler times.
