Lyman Beecher, a famous early American theologian, lived, learned, and worshipped in this area with Aunt Benton and Uncle Lot after his mother died. He entered Yale at age 16 and graduated in 1797. He married Roxanne Foote of Guilford in 1798. He was the father of Henry Ward Beecher, preacher, orator, and writer, and of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin."
