After leaving Lee before Richmond on June 13, 1864, Jubal A. Early traveled 450 miles, defeated Hunter at Lynchburg and Wallace on the Monocacy River in Maryland, threatened the city of Washington, and then, on the approach of large Union forces, withdrew over this road to the Shenandoah Valley on July 16, 1864.
