Humes Glacier lies in Washington’s Olympic Mountains within Olympic National Park, about 2.25 miles southeast of Mount Olympus’s summit. Beginning at nearly 6,000 feet above sea level, it descends for about 1.25 miles to around 4,800 feet. In 1907, members of The Mountaineers climbing club named it for Grant and Will Humes, regional guides, explorers, and pack-train operators. The glacier’s name preserves the early period of exploration and mountaineering in the Olympics, when local guides and climbing parties played an important role in opening the range to broader travel and study.
