Louisville Elementary School was built in 1959, giving the city its first separate public school for elementary-aged students. Before the 1959 facility was constructed, all public school students in grades 1-12 attended the same building at the corner of Mill and Gorgas Streets, which stood from 1922 through 2009. During its 53-year life span, Louisville Elementary earned a sterling reputation for outstanding students, supportive parents, and dedicated staff members, and many community citizens still recall the excitement of entering the newly constructed school in February 1959.
