Salt Hill is a 699-foot mountain in southeastern New York, southeast of Peekskill in Westchester County, best known for the remains of a former fire lookout on its summit. The Conservation Commission built a 73-foot Aermotor LS40 steel fire tower there in 1950, and it entered service in 1951. In its first year, the tower reported 22 fires and logged 70 visitors, showing both its role in forest surveillance and its appeal as a destination. It remained in use through the 1971 fire season before aerial detection replaced it, and its twisted remains still mark this site’s place in New York’s former fire tower network.
