The Magic House in Kirkwood, just outside St. Louis, opened in 1979 as a not-for-profit children’s museum devoted to hands-on learning, creativity, and problem-solving. Housed originally in a 1901 Victorian home of the George Lane Edwards family, it preserves exhibits on that early household while serving as an interactive museum founded by Jody Newman and Barbie Freund. Far outgrowing its original scale, it expanded repeatedly through additions and new exhibit spaces from the 1980s into 2008. With national recognition, more than 560,000 annual visitors, and over 12 million total visits, it has become a major regional family attraction with broad educational outreach.
