Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson played their last concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, on February 2, 1959. Their lives ended tragically in a plane crash 5.2 miles northwest of the Mason City Airport on February 3, 1959, along with pilot Roger Peterson.
