The men of Manchester gave their services in the war that saved the Union and secured equal rights for all under the Constitution, and in 1878 a grateful city built this memorial in their honor. It also bears the inscription Et Decorium est pro Patria mori Dulce, translated as It is sweet and glorious to die for one's country.
