Abraham Lincoln was a guest in this house from August 15-17, 1856, hosted by Zenas Aplington, founder of Polo. On Saturday, August 16, John D. Campbell and James W. Carpenter, law partners in Polo, joined Lincoln and Aplington in a carriage ride to Oregon, the Ogle County seat. There, Lincoln and “Long John” Wentworth, a six-term Congressman who later became Mayor of Chicago, were among several speakers at a political rally for John C. Fremont, the first Republican presidential candidate.
