Chocolate Glacier lies on the east slopes of Glacier Peak in Washington, descending from about 10,400 feet to roughly 5,900 feet and partly connecting with Cool Glacier south of the summit. Claude Ewing Rusk named it in 1906 after the chocolate-colored water at its terminus. Like Glacier Peak’s other glaciers, it has retreated over the long term, pulling back about 1,380 meters between 1906 and 1946, advancing about 450 meters during a cooler, wetter period from about 1950 to 1979, then retreating another 350 meters. Its terminus remains the lowest among the mountain’s east-side glaciers, though its lowest section is now stagnant.
