Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, opened in 1963 as the Fleischmann Atmospherium Planetarium and became notable for both astronomy education and modernist architecture. It was the first planetarium in the United States with a 360-degree projector that created horizon-to-horizon images, and its system could use time-lapse photography to compress a full day’s weather into minutes. Designed by Reno architect Raymond M. Hellmann as a hyperbolic paraboloid, the saddle-shaped building became a campus landmark. Its architectural importance is recognized by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and it remains a popular public science attraction.
