Major Robert Anderson and the one hundred, twenty-eight men of his command withstood the destructive bombardment of Fort Sumter for thirty-four hours on April Twelve-Thirteen, Eighteen hundred and Sixty-one and withdrew with the honors of war. The War of Secession began here. The tribute was erected under the bequest of E.M.C.A. Lawton, a daughter of Major Anderson, and accepted by Act of Congress approved May 11, 1928.
