The Preston County Buckwheat Festival began in 1938 and has been held annually except during four World War II years. Held the last week in September, it lasts four days and centers on eating, especially the famous buckwheat cakes, along with parades, a coronation, beef, dairy, and sheep exhibits, antique car shows, and many other events. From 1938 through 1991, the festival also recorded its general chairmen and the individuals associated with the roles of Queen Ceres, King Buckwheat, and King Fireman, including those who crowned them.
