Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River protects a 73.4-mile reach of the Delaware between Hancock and Sparrowbush along the New York-Pennsylvania border. Managed by the National Park Service with little federally owned shoreline, it preserves a lived-in river landscape valued for boating, fishing, wildlife watching, and notable bald eagle habitat, including a major wintering area in the Northeast. The corridor also holds important historic sites, including remains of the Delaware and Hudson Canal, built to move anthracite coal and other goods, Roebling’s Delaware Aqueduct at Lackawaxen, and the Zane Grey Museum. Conservation here relies heavily on private landowner easements as well as federal protection.
