The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, with a satellite campus in Winston-Salem, grew from efforts begun in 1924 to create a state art museum for the people of North Carolina. A 1947 state appropriation of $1 million established its collection, making it the first major museum collection in the United States created through state legislation and public funding, and helping keep permanent collection admission free. Opened in 1956, the museum later moved to its current site, where the main building opened in 1983 and a major expansion followed in 2010. Its collections span more than 5,000 years, and its museum park is among North America’s largest.
