Around 1780, Jacob J. Blauvelt built the main section of this sandstone home on the farm of his father, Johannes J. Blauvelt, and the east wing was added soon after. A west unit was later replaced by the present frame structure around 1830. Under the 1806 will of Johannes, Jacob inherited the house and the 148-acre northern half of the farm, which extended to the Hackensack River, the western boundary of the Tappan Patent.
