In late 1854, Albert Leonard built the Pine Grove Home and Inn in a grove of tall pines and became the first postmaster at a junction of stage roads to Jackson and Clinton. The Pine Grove post office was established on July 12, 1856. The first school opened about 1853. Several nearby mines in the East Gold Belt were worked during the Gold Rush and have been prospected ever since.
