Founded in 1860, Cambridge was abandoned in 1863 because of marauding Indians. Settlers returned in 1870 and installed a grist mill, and developers surveyed the townsite in 1874, after which a school, church, shops, and hotel were built. A post office was established and the Fort Sill-Fort Richardson military telegraph line came through in 1876, and the first newspaper in the county was founded there. Rapid growth halted when the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad bypassed the town in 1882. By then the place was known as Henrietta, the name retained when the county seat was moved there. Cambridge Cemetery still exists a mile north of the historic townsite.
