Morlatton Village, at Douglassville along the Schuylkill River, was Berks County’s first settlement site and includes the Mouns Jones House, built by Swedish settlers in 1716 and the oldest in Berks County, as well as the White Horse Tavern from about 1750–1762, the George Douglass Mansion from about 1763, and the Covered-Bridge Keeper’s House from about 1780. Nearby, John Potts, an ironmaster, completed Pottsgrove Manor in 1753, and the restored mansion recreates the lifestyle and times of Potts, his family, servants, and slaves. The Daniel Boone Homestead preserves historic structures and 579 acres of open space; Boone was born there in 1734, spent his first 16 years there, and the site interprets his youth and the story of the region’s eighteenth-century settlers before his family moved to North Carolina.
