Brazoria Townsite
History
Established in 1828 by John Austin, a friend of Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas," Brazoria was the site of the tavern of Jane Long, widow of Dr. John Long, who had tried in 1819 to free Texas from Spain. A port, social center, and market for the colony, it was burned by the enemy during the Texas Revolution and rebuilt. It remained the county seat and business center until 1897.
