The LaPointe-Krebs House in Pascagoula, long known as Old Spanish Fort, is a French colonial-era dwelling on Lake Catahoula and is widely recognized as Mississippi’s oldest extant historic building, the state’s only surviving structure from that era, and the oldest scientifically confirmed standing structure on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Built on land granted to Joseph Simon dit La Pointe between 1713 and 1717, its earliest timbers date to about 1757. The property later passed into the Krebs family, served agricultural uses through enslaved labor, and gained its familiar name when it became the fortified home of Spanish Army officer Don Enrique Ginarest during Spanish rule.
