Greenwood was founded Sept. 30, 1823. Its original landowners, descendants of Dutch immigrants, came from Mercer County, Kentucky. On or near this site, John B. and Jane Brewer Smock built a log cabin, and in that cabin the first church, Presbyterian, was organized Dec. 31, 1825, by Rev. Isaac Reed. The nine original members were Garrett Brewer, John B. Smock, Isaac and Rachel Demaree Smock, James and Charity Brewer Smock, Henry and Mary Smock, and Mary DeMotte Smock.
