In the spring of 1873, Tabor's first schoolhouse was built from logs cut and hauled from timber near the Missouri River, creating a building measuring 18 by 24 feet. Josef Zitka, the first teacher, received a salary of $20 per month. There were 30 pupils the first year, and school was taught for only three months. Renovation of the schoolhouse was a Tabor Jaycee's project for Tabor's centennial in 1972. It is now the focal point of the Vancura Memorial Park, owned and managed by the Czech Heritage Preservation Society.
