Construction of the Preston County Animal Shelter began in 1991 and was completed in 1992. At that time, it had one dog warden, Bruce Corley, who served in that position for thirteen years. Over time, the shelter grew into a successful adoption and animal care facility with a full-time staff that includes two full-time dog wardens. Its adoption program saves many animals each year, and the county pays for animals to be spayed or neutered and microchipped, helping drastically reduce the number euthanized annually. County funds and community donations cover needed veterinary services, while volunteers and donors from the community also contribute to the shelter's success. Its mission is to place each pet in a home that understands the commitment of pet ownership and is capable and prepared to accept that responsibility.
