Destruction of the C.S.S. Nashville
Military
5
The swift Confederate blockade runner Nashville, renamed Rattlesnake, was destroyed by the monitor Montauk on February 28, 1863, after running aground on a sandbar in a hairpin bend of the Ogeechee River. The fighting became a three-way battle, with the guns of Fort McAllister firing on the Montauk while the Montauk concentrated on the Nashville. The wreck of the Nashville lies approximately 1200 yards away.
