In 1863, monitor-type Union ironclads fired the largest naval guns used against land fortifications at Fort McAllister. Fifteen-inch shells penetrated 17 feet of sand, and when they exploded they dug craters 8 feet in diameter and 7 feet deep, but all damage could be repaired overnight.
