Hamblen County was organized in 1870 from parts of Jefferson, Grainger, and Hawkins Counties. The courthouse was finished in 1874 on land donated by G. W. Barnett, George W. Folsom, D. Morris, and John Murphey. Additions were made in 1955 and 1956, and major renovations were completed in 1969.
