Wyoming contains some of the last vast sagebrush-grassland habitat on the North American continent, and this helps support over two-thirds of the world’s pronghorn antelope and sage grouse. Along with Nevada and Montana, Wyoming holds the extensive, uninterrupted native landscapes these animals need to move between summer and winter range, and sagebrush provides a major food source, especially in winter when snow covers most other vegetation. Sagebrush habitat in Wyoming also supports many other distinctive forms of life, including golden eagle, sage thrasher, cottontail rabbit, horned lark, sage lizard, and western jumping mouse, among more than 150 wildlife species commonly associated with it. Wildlife agencies and state and federal land managers work with land users to maintain these native habitats and free-ranging wildlife populations, preserving an essential part of what makes Wyoming a wildlife paradise.
