Castle Gardens Petroglyph Site in Fremont County, Wyoming, is a large archaeological landscape of rock carvings cut into a long band of vertical cliffs, extending about 6 miles by 1 mile. Its images include human and animal figures, water turtles, and distinctive circular shields, with the shield-bearing figures giving their name to the local Castle Gardens Shield style. Researchers generally attribute the petroglyphs to Athabaskan peoples related to the Navajo and Apache and date them to about AD 1000 to 1250. The site holds an important place in the deep history of the Rocky Mountain and High Plains region and remains both protected and open to visitors.
