In the early 1950's, Preston County needed a hospital, so the county court decided to build a medical facility using approximately $1.5 million dollars. The Kingwood Fire Department donated land for the hospital, construction began, and the hospital was placed under the supervision of a Board of Trustees appointed by the Preston County Court. On July 16, 1955, less than two years later, the new hospital officially opened, and reporters called it "One of the finest of its size in the country." In 2015, Preston Memorial Hospital began a new chapter when the old building was torn down on April 30, 2015, and the new Preston Memorial Hospital opened on May 17, 2015. It continues to offer various services and serve patients of Preston County.
