Cumbres Pass lies near the Continental Divide between the waters of the Rio Grande and the San Juan. “Cumbres” is Spanish for “Summits.” Its altitude is 10,022 feet. A railroad was built there in 1880, a tollroad was built in 1881, and an improved highway opened in 1923.
