Magee Marsh Wildlife Area on Lake Erie in Ottawa County, Ohio, is a protected marsh renowned for dense seasonal migrations of waterfowl and other birds, making it important for birdwatching and regulated hunting. Samuel Brown remarked on its immense flocks in the early nineteenth century. After many regional marshes were converted to private hunting clubs, John Magee bought this land in 1903 but left it as hunting ground when flooding defeated farming plans. Ohio acquired it in 1951 and later used it in a Canada goose reintroduction program in the 1960s. Today its boardwalk and the Biggest Week in American Birding draw large crowds to one of Lake Erie’s best-known migration stopovers.
