John Patterson, son of William Patterson, was born in 1790 and died in 1886. He was Arkansas' first native born child of Anglo-Saxon parentage. He often asked a riddle about his life: he was born in a kingdom, Spain, reared in an empire, France, attained manhood in a territory, and became a citizen of a state, all while never being 100 miles from where he was born.
