Barnes Arboretum at Saint Joseph's University in Merion, Pennsylvania, occupies the former site of the Barnes Foundation art gallery and now operates under the university through a lease with the foundation. Begun in the 1880s by Captain Joseph Lapsley Wilson and purchased by the Barnes Foundation in 1922, it developed into both a botanical garden and an educational landscape, with its school established in 1940. The collection grew to more than 3,000 species and varieties of woody plants, plus a herbarium and library. Known for magnolias, rhododendrons, viburnums, and notable specimen trees, it remains a public and educational horticultural site.
