Founded in 1926 by immigrant Marie Prisland, the Slovenian Women’s Union of America began as an advocate for Slovenian immigrant women in the United States and later expanded into a broader cultural organization for immigrants and their descendants. Headquartered in Joliet, Illinois, it is now the Slovenian Union of America and continues to preserve Slovenian traditions, language, and heritage. Joliet’s Branch 20, organized in 1928, became one of the union’s largest. At the headquarters, the Slovenian Heritage Museum preserves the union’s history and the wider Slovenian-American experience through artifacts, archives, books, photographs, and long runs of the magazine Zarja, making it an important cultural and genealogical resource.
