On the grounds of Blackhawk Country Club in Madison, Wisconsin, this archaeological site preserves a notable cluster of Native American earthworks, including a flying goose effigy, three bear-shaped effigy mounds, a panther effigy, and linear and conical mounds. Built between 650 and 1200 A.D. by Late Woodland people of Wisconsin’s Effigy Mound Culture, the group belongs to the distinctive Upper Midwest tradition of shaping mounds into animals as well as geometric forms. In the 1970s, L. J. Markwardt helped secure their preservation and the restoration of part of the goose effigy. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 1, 1979.
