The Forks of Cheat Baptist Church was organized by the Rev. John Corbly on November 5, 1775, with 12 charter members, and holds the distinction of being the oldest church with continuous records west of the Alleghenies in what is now West Virginia. It takes its name from its location in the area between the fork of the Cheat and Monongahela Rivers, a place known as the Forks of Cheat since the earliest settlements there. Bishop Francis Asbury may have been at the church when he first visited this area on July 4, 1785, and preached at Cheat River. The church originally stood adjacent to Sunnyside Cemetery, was moved to this site in 1832, and the present building was dedicated in 1884.
