Friendship Hill was the Pennsylvania home of Albert Gallatin, a Swiss-born statesman who came to the United States in 1780 and built a major public career as a congressman, Treasury secretary under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and later ambassador to France and Great Britain. Set on 675 acres above the Monongahela River near Point Marion, the estate began with a brick house built in 1789 after Gallatin bought the property in 1788. Expanded in several stages into a seven-part residence, it is most closely associated with Gallatin’s private life and enduring place in the early republic.
