Activated in 1918 and inspected by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lt. Gen. George S. Patton during World War II, the 8th Infantry Division landed in France 28 days after D-Day, the invasion of Normandy, and participated in three other campaigns during the war. The division occupied this area at Ft. Jackson after being reactivated in 1940, and it was also here from 1950 to 1954.
