Sala Bosworth, born in Massachusetts in 1805, spent all but nineteen years of his eighty-five years in Washington County, studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, returned to paint many full size and miniature portraits of prominent county citizens, contributed historical drawings used in Samuel P. Hildreth's Pioneer History, created a mural in what is now the Unitarian Universalist Church in Marietta, moved late in life to Cincinnati, began painting with watercolors, and died there in 1890. Charles Sullivan also studied at the Philadelphia Academy, came to Washington County in 1833, became a close friend of Bosworth, painted portraits, and was especially noted for landscapes including views of Blennerhassett Island, the Blennerhassett mansion, and the mounds at Marietta before dying in Marietta in 1867. Lily Martin Spencer came to Washington County with her parents in 1833 at age 11, already showed recognized artistic talent by decorating the walls of her new home with charcoal sketches, studied under Bosworth and Sullivan, began working with oils, held her first exhibition in the county in 1841, left later that year with her father for Cincinnati for further schooling, married Benjamin Spencer in 1844, became her family's breadwinner, painted scenes of life from the woman's domestic point of view while aiming at moral improvement, became one of the leading genre artists of her time, and died in New York in 1902.
