During the Great Sioux Indian Massacre, fighting took place at Redwood on Aug. 18, 1862, Fort Ridgely on Aug. 20.-22., New Ulm on Aug. 23.-24., Birch Coulee on Sept. 2, Fort Abercrombie on Sept. 6, and Wood Lake on Sept. 23. Here, on September 26, 1862, a large body of Indians surrendered and 269 captives, mostly women and children, were released. This was mainly the result of the victory over the hostile Sioux at Wood Lake by Minnesota troops under command of General Henry H. Sibley.
