In Thurmont, formerly Mechanicstown, several notable buildings trace the town's commercial and civic history. The Central Trust Company Bank, a Greco-Roman building at Church and West Main Streets on the square, collapsed during the Great Depression, costing many residents their life savings, and was razed in the 1930s for a garage and filling station; its site is now Mechanicstown Park. Jacob Weller, a local blacksmith and early entrepreneur, developed the first friction matches in the United States after seeing examples from France, and the original Match House was likely a one-story workshop; today it is a two-story residence on West Main Street. George W. Stocksdale came to Mechanicstown in 1868, entered the lumber business, and with John H. Chew built a warehouse in 1870 for a general store and warehouse business; after a 1907 fire, the building was rebuilt, remained in business until Stocksdale's death in 1922, and is still known as the Stocksdale Building. Weller also built the Gilbert House in the early 1800s as Mechanicstown's first hotel, and it still stands on the square at East Main and North Church Street. In 1805 he built the Weller-Johnson House, or Weller's Tavern, which served for many years as the first inn and tavern before its sale in 1856 to George Johnson and his wife; it now stands at West Main Street and Altamont Avenue as a private residence. Acacia Lodge No. 155, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, began in 1871 and was chartered on November 30, 1871; in 1898 its members realized their goal of adapting the Bussard Building at 12 East Main Street into their temple by strengthening the second floor and adding a third story, while the lower floors housed businesses and offices, and the lodge still uses the upper floors. The Stoner House, built in 1838 on East Main Street and named for Mayor William J. Stoner, was demolished in 1961, but its French wallpaper was saved and later hung in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House during redecoration led by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Old Town Hall and Fire Station, built in 1890 on North Church Street, served until 1950, while firefighting in Thurmont dated to 1887 and was reorganized in 1938 into the force from which the Guardian Hose Company grew.
