Chestnut Ridge Natural Area Preserve in southwestern Virginia, spanning Giles and Bland counties, protects an unusually extensive old-growth forest with rare unbroken woodland for this part of the state. Covering 1,596 acres and dominated by northern red oak and chestnut oak, it also contains older cucumber magnolia and American basswood, many estimated at 300 to 400 years old. Established as a Natural Area Preserve in 2006, it remained privately owned until 2020, when the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation bought it. In May 2023, it grew by 775 acres, adding 1.5 miles of riparian forest along Dry Fork, including habitat for native trout.
